We work with a lot of new clients as we are constantly trying to grow our client base. And it never fails to amaze me how many of them we work with where we send them CV’s that we KNOW are right for them only for them to reject the candidate off CV.

One example is a client I worked with who rejected 3x CV’s that I had sent them. So I called them out on it. I managed to argue each of the three in for interview. 1x is now their senior manager, 1x won employee of the year and the other…well they didn’t get the job. But the first two were rejected off of CV originally. Had I not have argued the point then they would have missed out. How big of a mistake would that have been?

Why Reject off CV

I know why people reject candidates off of CV. It doesn’t clearly say what they want to see. Most CV’s being honest are a bit naff. There are tons of details missing, hidden or phrased badly. But what are you hiring for? Unless it’s a CV writer what do you expect? We recruit engineers, not writers.

Some people will argue that candidates should prepare CV’s better or that recruiters should format the CV’s as part of their service. After all, what is the client paying for? Surely formatting CV’s should be part of the service right?

Here is what a client is paying for; the best person for the job. When you hire a person you don’t hire a bit of paper. And even if formatted correctly as we do, you might still miss something as it isn’t obvious.

The difference between a specialist and a generic recruiter
